World Press Freedom Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. • The theme for World Press Freedom Day in 2025 was A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis. In 2024 the theme was A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.
  In 2023 the theme was Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights.
• According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. – Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
• The day is also celebrated with numerous events including the 'Press Freedom Australia Dinner' which is a major fundraising event that helps to raise money for the Media Safety and Solidarity Fund. The fund provides support and assistance to journalists who are killed, imprisoned, or forced into exile in the Asia-Pacific region.
• In 2022, Australia ranked 26th out of 180 countries based on freedom of press according to Reporters Without Borders, a slight fall from its 25th position in 2018
