World AIDS Day

Globally, World AIDS Day was first recognised in 1988, making it the first ever global health day. In Australia, the HIV epidemic has seen a significant decline since its peak in the early 1990s, thanks to the swift and effective response by government, communities, and the scientific community. However, the work is far from complete. As of 2019, more than 27,000 Australians are living with HIV, with over 900 individuals being newly diagnosed each year. World AIDS Day in Australia focuses on continuing the efforts to reduce HIV transmission, improve treatment outcomes, and invest in research towards a cure.

To commemorate World AIDS Day, a range of events and activities are held across Australia to raise awareness and to educate the public about the ongoing challenges and realities of the HIV epidemic.
