The idea for Staffordshire Day originated in 2015 when Staffordshire County Council and Enjoy Staffordshire came together to recognise the importance of raising awareness and appreciation of the county. Launched on May 1st, 2016, the celebration coincides with the anniversary of the formation of Josiah Wedgwood's iconic ceramic company, a significant milestone in the region's history. Staffordshire Day has grown in popularity every year, with more and more people taking part in the celebrations and promoting the county's unique contributions to the nation's heritage and culture.
Staffordshire Day is observed with a wide range of events and activities taking place all around the county. These include guided heritage walks, open houses at historic sites, special offers at local attractions, and food and drink markets featuring local products. There are also numerous events in local community centres, libraries, and schools that highlight the history, arts, and culture of Staffordshire. The celebration takes place every year on the 1st of May.
Staffordshire Day Facts
Staffordshire Day serves as an anniversary for Josiah Wedgwood. A potter and entrepreneur, Wedgwood started the Wedgwood company on 1 May, 1759. It became the largest manufacturer of Staffordshire pottery and transformed Staffordshire into one of the world's ceramic hub.
Several historic Staffordshire towns that were organised into one country were Wolverhampton, Walsall, West Bromwich, and Smethwick. They all became the West Midlands county in 1974.
The largest city in Staffordshire is Stoke-on-Trent. The city operates as an independent authority separate from the rest of the county.
In 2009, the largest-ever collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver artifacts was discovered in Staffordshire.
Stoke-on-Trent, a city within Staffordshire, is often referred to as the World Capital of Ceramics due to its long history of pottery production.
Staffordshire's history dates back to the pre-Roman period when it was home to several Celtic tribes. The area later became part of the Roman province of Britannia during their rule over Britain.
