DNA Day seeks to commemorate the discovery of DNA’s double helix in 1953. DNA is a molecule that contains the genetic instructions required for development, growth, and reproduction of living beings. This day also commemorates the success of the Human Genome Project in 2003. This international research project aimed to determine the base pairs that make up human DNA. This day offers more knowledge about genetics. It also offers the opportunity to learn more about genomic research.
DNA Day was established in 2003 by the United States Senate and House of Representatives. It has been observed annually on April 25th by the National Human Genome Research Institute.
Facts about DNA Day
DNA was discovered in 1869 by Swiss scientist Friedrich Miescher. While researching white blood cells, Miescher was able to uncover the molecular make-up of nuclein, or DNA. He learned that it was made up of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
According to the ongoing analysis in 2023-2024 of ancient dog DNA found in Europe and Asia, shows that domestication started earlier than initially believed aroundd 15, 000 years ago.
Humans share 99.9% of their DNA with every other human.
Chimpanzees and bonobos are the most genetically similar primates to humans. They share 98.7% of their DNA with us.
The kingdom of fungi- mushrooms are more closely related to humans than plants.
