International Delegates Day seeks to commemorate the 850 delegates from fifty countries who participated in the San Francisco Conference in 1945. This conference laid the foundation for the creation of the United Nations, an institution created in recognition of the need for diplomacy to prevent war and conflict. Delegates from different countries represented their countries and they continue to do so today. It is their responsibility to maintain international peace and to encourage respect for human rights and personal freedoms.
International Delegates Day was established in 2019 by the UN General Assembly. It is observed annually on April 25.
